MWC Barcelona ran from 27 February to 2 March this year at the Fira Gran Via. Adnan Salkic, Darwin’s VP of Sales and Business Development, went along in order to catch up with Darwin’s partners and connect with potential new clients. Rodrigo Barreto was also at the event, and, courtesy of our partner Cognizant, had the opportunity to meet Formula One driver Pedro de la Rosa. Pedro gave a masterclass on how to win a race between evenly matched competitors: advice we can put into play at Darwin. The Darwin team presented our continuous connectivity solution and services to potential customers and partners, including technology vendors and organisations in the field of satellite and terrestrial communications. MWC, or Mobile World Congress, is a huge annual event for the telecommunications industry and has been held under assorted different names since 1987. In the thirty-six years the event has existed, it’s seen huge advances in communications technology and a complete transformation of the way we live. By working together, organisations can achieve great things, and events like MWC help to facilitate the connections that can ultimately grow into change. Virgin Media O2 and Cisco launch portable 5G network at Darwin SatCom Lab

On 15 March 2023, Virgin Media O2 and Cisco launched a remarkable product: a private 5G network in a box. The portable network is aimed at organisations that want to make use of 5G’s high capacity and potential but cannot afford to invest in 5G infrastructure.

The launch took place at O2 and Darwin’s SatCom Lab at Harwell Science and Innovation Campus. Darwin also played a part in the portable network’s development by testing the product in its fleet of connected vehicles, including the Darwin Autonomous Shuttle.

Daniela Petrovic, Darwin’s co-founder and delivery director, was pleased to be involved in the innovative product’s testing and launch. ‘It’s been a great privilege for me to work again with Virgin Media O2’s Dr David Owens, head of technical trials, and Steve Brown, new technology trials manager,’ she said. 5G is a technology with vast possibilities, but the low range of 5G towers restricts the areas where it can be used. By developing a portable 5G network, Virgin Media O2 and Cisco are opening the potential of 5G up to a broader audience, and Darwin is glad to play a role. Darwin visits Canada for Innovate UK’s Business Innovation Programme

Darwin visits Canada for Innovate UK’s Business Innovation Programme

Both the UK and Canada have an interest in the potential of autonomous vehicles, and the countries can achieve greater heights in the connected and automated mobility (CAM) sector by working together. From 4 to 10 March 2023, the UK’s national innovation agency Innovate UK brought a delegation from the UK to Ontario in order to develop connections with potential partners, as part of its Global Business Innovation Programme.

The attendees were organisations developing CAM solutions, and Darwin was pleased to be part of the UK delegation. Our co-founder and delivery director, Daniela Petrovic, went to Ontario to discuss Darwin’s work with autonomous vehicles, such as the Darwin Autonomous Shuttle, and how our vehicle communications technology can support automated mobility.

This event was a great opportunity to learn more about the autonomous vehicle market in Canada, and to connect with organisations that could benefit from Darwin’s knowledge and technology. On 9 March Daniela presented Darwin's technologies at Toronto Trade Centre, alongside George Dunlop presenting the work of Quantum Dice, another innovative Oxfordshire-based company. The presentations from both organisations were extremely well received. Daniela had the opportunity to meet Nusrat Ghani, UK Minister for Business and Trade, who was a fellow guest of the British High Commissioner for Canada. ‘It was an excellent meeting, showing incredible synergies in the development of cutting-edge technologies and many complementary facilities that we can utilise,’ Daniela said. Daniela also visited BlackBerry’s headquarters, where the delegation learnt about adaptation from manufacturers of mobile handsets, and Aviva Canada, where she and the Aviva team discussed insurance for autonomous vehicles in Canada. ‘My overall view is that Canada is an excellent market for Darwin,’ Daniela concluded. ‘I am following up on all discussions in the coming weeks.’ Autonomous vehicles and other CAM solutions have the potential to improve both sustainability and quality of life, reducing fuel consumption and connecting rural areas to essential services. We hope that, by combining the knowledge and skills of CAM players across the UK and Canada, this Innovate UK event will ultimately bring benefits for everyone. I am glad to advance our connection with academia in this way, in addition to our ongoing collaboration with universities as part of our approach to running a business.’ Darwin’s interest in the importance of education can also be seen in the Darwin Business Innovation Lab, a space where business leaders can learn new ways to tackle problems and innovate. The lab combines the knowledge of experts from Darwin Innovation Group, the University of Oxford and the University of Glasgow.
